Books Meme

Some questions on books, that have making their rounds in the blogosphere, handed to me by Ronald. The first and the last time I will take part in such a relay, only because the questions are on books.

You’re stuck inside Fahrenheit 451. Which book do you want to be?
As I understand it, the question posed here is which book am I willing to learn by heart, in order to become it in the living library that cannot be burned by government. Let’s be ambitious here and say Gerrit Komrij’s anthology of contemporary Dutch poetry: De Nederlandse poëzie van de negentiende en twintigste eeuw in 1000 en enige gedichten. This’ll give me some head start as well, as I seem to know quite a lot of poetry by heart already.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
In movies and TV series yes, but never in books. I’ve been moved by them, have wept over some; however, the women in words never became real enough for me to fancy them.

The last book you bought was…?
David Sedaris, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim

The last book you read was…?
David Sedaris, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim [my review will appear here]

What are you currently reading?
I am always busy with several books at the same time. At the moment:
H.J.A. Hofland, Tegels lichten
Douwe Draaisma, Het verborgen raderwerk
Tomas Ross, Take Care! Omzien naar Van Gogh
S. Vestdijk, De glanzende kiemcel
Philip Larkin, Collected Poems
Saul Bellow, The Actual

Five books you would take to a desert island…
I do not really get this question; to me books are either paper escape capsules, or treasuries of knowledge. On a desert island there’s no escape needed because the world is elsewhere, and there’s probably not much to know about such an island.

So, in the spirit of this ridiculous question: probably five songbooks with lots of lyrics to give me something new to sing.

I think it’s much more interesting to ask which books I would have taken with me to prison, or the loony bin.

Whom are you passing this stick on to and why?
I drop it here and now. Nevertheless, people willing to continue this relay, are cordially invited to take it up, and say so in the comments box.

Een mailtje van mijn kant was op zijn plaats geweest inderdaad. De roes na de 1-2 overwinning en een kinderpartijtje zaten vandaag echter danig in de weg.
