I should have known the image of Che Guevara has already become a mainstream icon, that can be used for just about anything.
It inspired the sleeve design of a Madonna cd, among many other things.
And even the original picture has found many other uses. British advertizers thought it could promote Smirnoff vodka. Much to the chagrin of photographer Alberto Korda, who took the original picture. He won an out of court settlement of $ 50,000.
Still, Korda died in 2001, and meanwhile Che’s face has been used as a print for bikini fabric. As shown by Gisela Bündchen here.

In de waarschijnlijk oneindige reeks van regeringsleiders die zich ter propaganda als Che Guevara laten afbeelden, heeft zich nu ook de vaderlandsche minister-president gevoegd.
De politieke jongerenorganisatie CDJA gaat voor hem cheerleaden, en zal daartoe T-shirts met zijn afbeelding verkopen.

Moljevic verwees er al naar, en ik kende dit plaatje van Matt Diffee uit dat dikke boek met alle cartoons uit The New Yorker. Maar toch. De grap zit natuurlijk in de omkering. Alleen weet ik niet of er veel T-shirts van ‘The Simpsons’ in omloop zijn. Bijvoorbeeld.

Ergens in Santa Clara op Cuba staat dit beeld van Che Guevara, waarvan de pose overduidelijk ontleend is aan die foto van Korda. Dat kind is er later bij verzonnen, net zoals die frutsel op Che’s epaulet. Maar mooi aan deze foto van Walter Callens is dat die toont hoeveel moeite gedaan werd nog iets meer te maken van dat iconische fotobeeld. Dat alle inspanning kitsch opleverde, is nog weer daar aan toe.
Mijn fascinatie achter mijn verzameling aan Che-afbeeldingen, of variaties daarop, betreft nu juist het lakse gemak waarmee steeds maar gedaan wordt.

Vindicat atque Polit, zo heet het studentencorps in Groningen. ‘Handhaaft en beschaaft’ betekent dit. Daarom ook staat er een grote lichtreclame van de alcoholfabrikant Hooghoudt op hun soos. [Zoals te zien is op deze foto bij Gelkinghe zelf].

Wordt de beeltenis van Che dan werkelijk altijd verkeerd gebruikt? Nee, bij protestmarsen in Latijns-Amerika mag hij van mij onbeperkt worden ingezet. Helemaal als daar ietwat knullige huisvlijt aan te pas komt. [En vraag me niet naar het waarom van die kerstmannen. Ik weet alleen dat dit protest in Venezuala plaatsvond].
In Argentinë wordt Che dan weer gebruikt om de band tussen alle Latijns-Amerikaanse landen aan te geven. Daar kan een mens zich ook van alles over afvragen, maar dit protest tegen de Bush-regering ziet er in elk geval goed uit.

Door de dwang van het ronde getal wordt dezer dagen vrij massaal herdacht dat Che Guevara 40 jaar geleden stierf. De stoffelijke Che, tenminste.

De Argentijnse stad Rosaria ontdekt eindelijk het merk Che, en plaatst een vier meter hoog standbeeld ter zijner eer. Tachtig jaar na zijn geboorte in deze plaats.

Er was wel degelijk een relletje om Che Guevara tijdens de verkiezingscampagne van Barack Obama. Maar dit kwam door het initiatief van éen enkele medewerker, die een Cubaanse vlag in d’r kantoortje had opgehangen, met daarop die overbekende kop van Che.
Obama zelf werd alleen door tegenstanders als Che Guevara afgebeeld, en meestal zo ontstellend knullig dat het vaak niet eens duidelijk is dat het om Obama gaat.
Hierboven staat éen van minst slechte pogingen. Maar ongetwijfeld zullen er de komende jaren meer volgen.
Obama had natuurlijk ook al zijn eigen iconische afbeelding, gemaakt door Shepard Fairy — die op diens beurt inmiddels vele malen gepersifleerd is.

Opvallend genoeg was het erg makkelijk afbeeldingen te vinden van Sarah Palin in Che Guevara-pose. Omdat het eerste waar iedereen aan denkt bij een Republikeinse kandidate voor het vice-presidentschap is welk een rebel ze moet zijn.
Nu goed, deze geeft extra commentaar, via het sterrenbeeld op de baret.

Merkwaardig is dan weer dat Che helemaal niet op opzichzelf lijkt, op de omslag van de biografie Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life.

What does Che Guevara have in common with Rudi Völler? Both wear a moustache, and I believe that Che played some football as well. That’s about it. Still, the moustache makes it possible to picture the latter as iconic as the former.
But, I don’t understand really, why the German football magazin Kicker is selling these Völler T-shirts. Isn’t the mere fact that Völler could become a millionaire through his skills in an overrated game not reward enough for him? Or, does this mean they want the former German national team manager to be killed and become a martyr as well?

Even worse than picturing a German football player as a revolutionary, is using that iconic image to honour an American president.
The website linked even sells these T-shirts with the text “Viva la Reagan revolucion”. Which, considering what the Americans under his presidency did in the Spanish speaking countries in middle America, is so utterly tasteless words fail me.
