Barbellion

Back in 1996 Dutch publisher De Arbeiderpers brought this diary to my attention. And for years I told English and American acquaintances about this gem of a book, and was disappointed not even the name of the writer was known to them.

Times have changed.

W. N. P. Barbellion was the alias Bruce Frederick Cummings choose when he prepared his diary for publication. This book, The Journal of a Disappointed Man has now been regarded as a classic in the English literature.

The website barbellionblog has set out on the task to reprint the journal entries in the order they were written.

In this Journal, my pen is a delicate needle point, tracing out a graph of temperament so as to show its daily fluctuations: grave and gay, up and down, lamentation and revelry, self-love and self-disgust. You get here all my thoughts and opinions, always irresponsible and often contradictory or mutually exclusive, all my moods and vapours, all the varying reactions to environment of this jelly which is I.
