Advanced indexing

HotBot offers a toolbar for Internet Explorer with one major feature the Google toolbar lacks. HotBot allows you to index the files on your own computer, so they become searchable as well.

Mind you, rumour has Google is working on something simular. And Microsoft is going to offer it in Longhorn, or whatever the new OS will be called.

And okay, the HotBot search function for my own files works, be it primitively. But I don’t like to use Internet Explorer, and have even removed it from all but one computer.

I used to use Discovery, that was freely distributed by AltaVista a long time ago. That program showed results in any browser, and could index e-mail stored in Eudora as well. But Discovery never was completely reliable either, and indexing files simply took ages.

So, I’m still looking for cheap, preferably free, software to index all the .rtf, .doc and .pdf files on my computers. Is there any reader with a good suggestion here?
